Modern landscapes are about clean lines, defined areas, and attention to detailing in the hardscaping. Plants in a modern landscape become an accessory or decoration rather than the main event.

Modern landscapes tend to make practical use of the space, turning a garden into an extension of the house as an outdoor room. You can create a modern landscape over a large open area or incorporate it into a small courtyard to gain maximum use out of the small area.

Common features in a modern landcape include raised garden beds, built in seating, and long tiles or pavers. Often a low maintance approach is implemented, including artificial grass and garden edgings to keep everything contained to where it belongs.

You might also expect a landscaper to include a mixture of textures, such as loose pebbles, carefully contained, to border a paved area, or a decked area interrupted by a line of pavers for no reason other than styling.

Almost any style of plants could be incorporated into a modern landscape, as long as they have their appointed place in the carefully designed garden beds or pots. You could also incorporate mass planting of one particular plant to tie in to the modern garden.

Similar to a tropical styled landscape in most ways due to Bali’s tropical climate, you can add a touch of the Balinese styling with a few specific items.

Consider garden art or ornaments, such as Buddhas, umbrellas, woodcarvings and water features to enhance the feel of Bali in your landscape. Have pebbles, either loose or mosaic, meeting timber boardwalks.

Your landscape should be purposed for relaxation, making use of bamboo both growing and used in screening and structures. A coastal landscape serves two purposes; to represent the natural landscape of the coast with it’s colour palette, choice of materials and plantings, and also may be necessary if living on the coast that the materials and plant choices will stand up to the salty breezes.

Use greys, blues, and dusty greens to mimic the natural landscape of the coast. Weathered wood within the landscape can suggest driftwood. Loose pebbles are reminiscent of the sandy beaches.

Plant choices will consider what will grow in the coastal environment. The look of the hardscape may depend on whether you opt for a nautical look, the weather beaten natural look, or incorporate a modern look, but the plants will still be limited to what will grow near the coast.

Using plants similar to what you will find growing naturally in the dunes is one solution. Tough, succulent ground covers next to rocks and pebbles can create an authentic coastal landscape, as well as fine leaved plants, grass plants that can move with the ocean breezes, and plants with a silver or blue hue.

Think swimming pools, in any shape or size whether a small plunge pool, long, straight lap pool, a curved family sized pool or a beautifully custom installed pool designed with an abundance of rocks to blend in to the landscape like a natural spring.

The most important feature, however, is the tropical plants that adorn the landscape. Broad leaved, shade loving plants in all colours are welcome here; ferns, palms and bird of paradise alike. In a traditional Japanese landscape, you can expect asymmetry and a strong connection to natural elements. Consider raised walkways that take you through the landscape, over and around Koi ponds that are aerated by waterfalls made from natural stone and bamboo spouts. If not water, then at least the representation of water, with dry creek beds or sand raked like waves.

Rocks can be natural stone or loose pebbles, but any stone man made will need to be added with careful consideration to the authenticity of the garden. Of course, you could have a modern garden with Japanese influences; this would certainly welcome some straight lines.

Think natural, harmonious and simplistic for your Japanese landscape. Rocks, water, plants and ornaments. Ground covers and moss are welcome here. Garden ornaments might include stone lanterns, and you might consider bamboo fencing and screening. In the way of plants, you can’t go wrong with a Japanese Maple, a flowering fruit tree to represent the cherry blossom, such as the flowering plum, and of course don’t forget the potted bonsai.
